I chose a 5 star rating because of the quality this product gives me overall. Running this through my bass rig I finally got the punchy sound I've been looking for. The fact that it is a passive pickup means no hassle with batteries. Thus far I have actually used it in a performance live. I would highly recommend this product even if it is only to be used as an acoustic.

This bass gets 5 stars relative to its price. I have been playing guitar and bass professionally for over 20 years. I have two other 4 string acoustic basses but bought this one because of the 5 strings, positive reviews, and excellent price. The other basses are an Olympia, which has a really neat design, and a Fender that was pretty expensive...around $800 if I remember correctly. This bass has a huge body, which I believe helps its sound quality immensely. It dwarfs the other two basses I have and two jumbo acoustic guitars I have. It measured 18" lower bought, 21.25" length, and 4.25" depth. The jumbo 7 string guitar I measured was 16.25", 20", and 4" respectively. That makes for a large difference in interior body volume. I expected the low B to be either weak in volume or "boomy", but the bass actually has a very strong and balanced sound across all 5 strings. I also liked the thin satin finish. I think a thinner finish contributes to a better sound, as the top can vibrate more freely. The satin is very attractive to me. Woods look good with a nice spruce (?) top and mahogany back and sides. The top is obviously laminated and I guess so are the back and sides. Laminated wood tends to be stronger and more durable, so for this monster size bass with lots of string tension it is probably a good choice. Solid wood probably sounds a little better, but for $200 you are'nt getting anywhere close to solid woods for that price. The pickup works fine and sounds very much like the bass acoustically. I didn't notice the tone slider change the sound very much, but that doesn't really matter as it sounds good as is and you always have tone controls on the amp. The output is weak, so depending on your amp and how loud you want to play, you may start running out of knob travel. I have a nice Fishman preamp somewhere I can always use if need be, although probably not. With an acoustic bass you probably aren't going to play too loud anyway, because the guitar will start to feed back. Overall I am extremely happy with this purchase.

Out of the box it was actually in tune! I went over the bass pretty carefully, fit and finish is nice. Everything I expected in a budget bass. The strings are okay but phosphor bronze acoustic strings are needed. I wiped the instrument down with a product I have been using for my instruments; cleaned the strings real well and it plays good. I'll have to do a set up, but nothing major. The tuning machines are budget but work okay. The unplugged projection and tone is a little buzzy I adjusted my playing to a softer touch on the plucking and the buzzes were under control. Plugged in was fine too. Five stars for meeting my expectations. I wasn't expecting anything over the price tag, but it actually came in better than I expected. Made in PRC. I'm satisfied.

What a great instrument and you can't beat the price. This is my second Dean acoustic bass. I wish they made a fretless version. The sound of the bass is fine when playing unplugged. I was not sure about the passive controls (verses active) at first but I have no complaints being plugged in. I have a Fishman acoustic preamp which does give it an extra boost. All in all I am very happy with Dean's acoustic basses. I am a progressive metal bassist for what it's worth. It's fun to play.

This bass is great. I had a bit of trouble at first with the neck, and turning the truss rod didn't fix it. I called Dean and told them this and they said I should probably return it. I put in a return request with Amazon and by morning, the dysfunctional bass was gone and it's replacement was in the mail. Exceptionally fast service. I received the new bass a few days later, and it is spectacular. I have played an electric bass for 4 years, but I needed something unplugged to jam around camp fires. This instrument is perfect for that. It is beautiful, has a deep booming sound and it works very well plugged in as well. Overall a great buy, especially for the money.

One the best basses for the price

Had to reorder due to damage to initial order. Great bass guitar and happy customer!

This is a great acoustic bass, but not out of the box by itself. First of all, like most stock guitars and basses right from the manufacturer, the strings it comes with are terrible! Also, the frets are typically coated to prevent rusting during transport from China/Japan/Korea or where ever it is manufactured. When you buy an instrument from a music store, they typically do all the prep work for you. Purchasing through Amazon, you are essentially purchasing direct from the manufacturer and so you have to do the prep. Most guitars/basses ship with the strings detuned so the neck was not under tension during shipment. This was the case with my bass also. Remove the manufacturers strings, and clean the neck with a plain, dust free cloth. I purchased one from a local store that is made for cleaning LCD/LED TV screens that was microfiber. Next, put on the new strings. I strongly recommend light bronze strings, and I purchased a set of D'Addario EPBB170-5 Phosphor Bronze 5-String Acoustic Bass Strings, Long Scale, 45-130 from Amazon. Tune them, and let the bass set for about an hour, and then tune again. Keep this up for at least 4 hours before considering adjusting the neck. My bass did not require neck adjustment after this, and had no buzzing. If you don't want to do this yourself, most music stores will do it for you, but not for free. Secondly, this bass has a passive pick up and tone controls - no real preamp. This means the output is very low. Get a preamp to go with it. I bought a Behringer BDI21 Bass Amp Modeler Preamp DI Box (also from Amazon, for $39.99) and with it, this bass sounds awesome through an amp! If you are going to just play unplugged, you won't need it. The satin finish on the bass is fantastic. The pictures do not do justice to the quality of the woodgrain that shows through. I used to have a Fender acoustic bass that cost three times what this bass costs, and it didn't sound any better. You can't go wrong with this instrument. Just remember, you need a few extras for the best experience.

Purchased as a compromise between quality and price. Four string version had been given high marks for entry to intermediate level musician, and I had been looking at am Ibanez EAB which was given higher marks but was more expensive, The model I had looked at locally was about 50% off. This model was over 50% off list and $70-$90 less than the 4 string Dean or the Ibanez. Despite poor packing for shipping (store display cardboard box with no outer shipping container box, the guitar narrowly escaped any damage (the box did not). Mahogany back and sides and large body provide a large acoustic tone, and passive electronics provide boost without distortion. Suits my tastes, wallet, and level of playing. Completely satisfied with the product. Would buy again? Yes. Recommend to others? indeed. Pros: Price, Big fat acoustic tone Cons: having to learn fifth "B" string at bottom, packaging from the supplier was inadequate

I played a few at the local big box music stores. They all buzzed and rattled.... The Dean came out of the nicely package box and had some lite fret buzz in a couple of places, but overall sounded great with nice real growly lows. I adjusted the neck on mine a bit and eliminated the fret buzz and maintained the intonation. I also replaced the somewhat sub-par strings with a set of half-rounds to maintain the growl but lighten up on the feel and bite when played hard. Now it plays perfect. Played with a few friends and their acoustic guitars all un-amped and the volume from the body matched nicely. To get this acoustic response the body of the guitar is quite large and can be a bit of a bear to hug while sitting. Standing is preferred for my average stature. To amplify, buy a preamp peddle to boost the piezo bridge pickup before you go into your bass amp or sound board, ... it needs the extra boost. Once pre-amped it sounds fine with low bass response. Get the behringer pedal and you can sound shape it a bit before amplifying or recording. I'm completely happy for the price, nice quality and sound.
